Looking back on the past yearWe look back on the past year with pleasure. Highlights from the perspective of the cultural-historical society ("Heimatverein") were certainly our four main events. The celebrations on Easter Sunday, as they used to take place in older days, with the traditional "Ostereiertrüllen" (a game with Easter eggs, played by children; the child that throws or rolls the egg(s) the furthest, wins all the eggs) on the big field in front of the new "Nordseehaus" (Northsea house), the "Frühjahrsfest" (spring celebrations) on Ascension Day, the celebrations in September with a great tombola and finally the Baltrum "Oktoberfest (originally it is a beer festival in Munich in October)". And plenty of cakes, cakes, cakes and cakes! We would like to thank all industrious hands once more - those, who baked and those, who distributed them! People were playing dice with and guessing games or quizzes with amber stones and during the amber stone polishing there were many interested spectators. Other tables were filled with all kinds of delicious island marmalades, one could buy hand made dolls and teddy bears for an appealing price or look for a bargain and go search through the book trunk. Very successful were our tombolas with many attractive prices - each time the raffle tickets were sold out after one hour. We would like to express our thanks once more towards all donators and helpers. We were pleased to welcome so many visitors at and to receive much response after the seminars about the Baltrum "Geschichte und Geschichten" (History and stories) in the old "Inselkirche" (island church) with stories about the island, the coast and its people and the film sessions about Old-Baltrum in the island room. We closed off the year with the Nicholas - raffle/lottery, which has turned into a tradition. In that time of year the islanders are basically the only people there, they do enjoy themselves in different groups that change and some of them sneaked out happily after a great evening and an arm full of (Christmas) stollen and currant bread. Looking ahead to the activities in the year 2001In the "Inselkammer" (island room) our guest gets acquainted with the life of the islanders in older days. Regular events (when changing always Thursday):
Special events: the Easter celebrations on Easter Sunday, the "Frühlingsfest" (spring celebrations) on Ascension Day and two society celebrations in September/October. |
