The "Bummert" is a particular kind of East Friesian double house, where two end - country houses meet at the gable. There are appr. 50 occupied houses of this kind in East Friesland.
The origin of the name "Bummert" is not quite clear. There are some people, who associate it with inns, with "bombards". J. ten Doorkaat Koolmann, "Wörterbuch der ostfriesischen Sprache" (Dictionary of the East Friesian language) of 1879, believes that the word is derived from the Italian word "bomba" - in the meaning of 'bragging, boasting, pomposity'. Because a "Bummert" "is broadly based and shows off so to speak" with regards to its end. Anyone who would like to receive some more information, we would be pleased to send the article by Gert Saathoof "Der Bummert - eine aussterbende, alte ostfr. Hausform" (The "Bummert" - an extinct, old East Friesian type of house").

Would you like to help us, to maintain this beautiful house and to layout and refurbish the island museum? We appreciate your donation to:
